Usage Rights (Content Licensing)
The license that lets a brand use a creator’s content anywhere beyond their own organic post — a separate line item from the content fee, scoped by platform, duration, and whether the use is organic or paid.
By default, the creator owns what they make. A content fee usually only buys the right for them to post it on their own account and for you to reshare it there. Anything else — running it on your brand handles, your website, a pitch deck, or, the expensive version, as a paid ad — needs an explicit license naming which platforms, how long, which territories, and whether you can edit or repurpose the footage. Common organic-usage windows run 30, 60, or 90 days; paid usage (see whitelisting) is priced and negotiated separately.
Get the license in writing before the shoot, not after you see footage you want. A creator who agreed to “a Reel” did not agree to a billboard. Price usage as its own line on the rate card, and set an expiry — perpetual, unlimited usage rights for a single micro content fee is a bad trade for the creator, and usually a sign the brief undervalued the deliverable.
