EMV (Earned Media Value)
A dollar estimate of what a creator’s earned impressions, likes, comments, and shares would have cost as paid media — a scale number, not a sales number. Use it for context, never as the metric that decides renewal.
The formula is simple and the standard is not: take impressions, likes, comments, shares (sometimes saves and views), assign each a dollar value roughly benchmarked off comparable paid CPMs, and add it up. 2026 industry estimates put organic EMV at roughly 2–4x an equivalent paid CPM, since earned content carries implicit trust a placed ad does not. Multiply that across a wave of creators and totals get large fast — some 2026 industry-wide estimates put total EMV in the hundreds of billions against tens of billions of actual ad spend, which is the whole marketing-deck appeal of the number.
That appeal is also the problem. There is no agreed formula — every platform and tool picks its own per-action dollar values — so EMV numbers are not comparable across vendors and inflate easily with raw reach. A macro post with a large, partly-fake audience can post a bigger EMV than a micro wave that actually sold product. Report EMV if a stakeholder wants a scale number for a deck. Decide budget and renewals on ROAS and CPE instead.
